Page of Swords
curiosity · apprentice · vigilance · information · questioning
The Page of Swords is the apprentice of the mind: wanting to know, wanting to understand, asking the question no one asked. He stands high with his sword raised, watchful as someone scanning the horizon for new information. As an inner posture, it appears when you begin to study something, gather data, test arguments, or when you need the courage to ask what you have not yet understood. The curiosity here is frank and a little impatient: it is not satisfied with ready-made answers.
Draw the cards Bring your question, draw the cards and see what they show.
Reversed
When reversed, it describes the apprentice who stopped learning. It can be chatter that replaces listening, curiosity turned to watching other people's lives, or the repetition of borrowed opinions as if they were a position of one's own. It also appears when fear of seeming ignorant keeps you from asking. Another reading is that of someone discovering that poorly understood information has been circulating on its own.
Light
- Active curiosity
- Courage to ask what you do not understand
- Attention to what others let slip
- Learning without pretending mastery
Shadow
- Gossip and surveillance disguised as interest
- Asking everything and listening to nothing
- Borrowed opinion
- Irony used as a shield
Questions to notice
- What are you repeating without having checked for yourself?
- What question do you avoid asking so as not to seem naive?
- Where could your curiosity become listening?
What the card shows
Psychological aspects
The function of apprehending reality: observing, comparing, doubting, formulating. When it is alive, new material is received with interest and tested. When it is blocked, thought protects itself with inherited certainties and avoids putting any hypothesis at risk.
Emotional aspects
Enthusiasm at discovery, anxiety for answers, a certain nervousness in someone who does not yet master the subject. There may be restlessness and a wish to settle the doubt now, with no time for understanding to mature.
Behavioural aspects
Reading, asking, taking notes, commenting, sharing what you have learned. Also interrupting, spreading information without checking the source, and treating serious matters with irreverence to disguise insecurity.
In daily life
Relationships
Messages exchanged, conversations that clarify, curiosity about the other's life. Care with the interest that turns into surveillance and with the spontaneity that does not weigh the impact of what it says at the moment it says it.
Work
The beginning of learning, study, research, training, contact with new information. A good phase for asking and observing before giving an opinion, and a poor one for defending a position with no solid basis behind it.
Personal life
A wish to understand something you had always taken for granted. It asks for reading, writing and conversation with those who know more, with the patience of someone who accepts being at the beginning of a learning.
The image
Standing on high, windy ground, a young figure holds an upright sword with both hands. The trees in the background bend to the same side and jagged clouds cross the sky, with birds in flight. The posture is that of someone searching the horizon, and the firm two-handed grip suggests watchful vigilance more than an impulse to attack.
