The Devil
attachment · dependency · desire · shadow · secret deal
The Devil speaks of what you do repeatedly and say you did not want to do. Desire, pleasure, possession, money, power and the body are not the problem in themselves. As a tool of self-knowledge, it appears when a bond promises immediate relief and charges dearly later, and when you no longer know whether you are there by choice or by habit.
Draw the cards Bring your question, draw the cards and see what they show.
Reversed
Inverted, it often points to a movement of exit: seeing your own attachment with less shame and beginning to negotiate with it. It can also mean the opposite, a complete denial of the instinctive part, a life so controlled that nothing vital circulates, or a moralism that treats any desire as a grave defect. It is worth noticing whether what you call discipline is not merely fear of looking at what you desire.
Light
- Recognising desire without pretending it does not exist
- Seeing the toll a habit charges
- Humour about your own vices
- Working with the shadow instead of denying it
Shadow
- Denying dependency and calling it choice
- Guilt that feeds the cycle
- Using power to hold someone
- Bargaining with your own rule
Questions to notice
- Which habit do you keep knowing the price it charges?
- What comfort does the chain still offer?
- If no one were watching, what would you see clearly about this desire?
What the card shows
Psychological aspects
Contact with your own shadow without sentimentality. Recognising envy, jealousy, greed and the will to power as inner material, and not as proof that you are a bad person.
Emotional aspects
Pleasure crossed by guilt, momentary relief that goes missing again. It often comes with the feeling of being bound by something that, deep down, still offers some comfort.
Behavioural aspects
Repeating behaviours whose cost is already known, hiding consumption, lying by omission, negotiating with your own rule and indefinitely postponing the day to stop.
In daily life
Relationships
Bonds of possession, jealousy, seduction and mutual dependency, or agreements in which one stays for fear of being alone. Also the moment of looking at these arrangements without deceiving yourself about who chooses to remain.
Work
Environments that pay well and drain your health, positions kept for status, contracts that bind. It invites you to compare what the place offers with what it takes away.
Personal life
Body, pleasure, food, money, screens, shopping: the areas where the measure has already been lost. It asks for honesty instead of a promise of abstinence.
The image
On a pedestal sits a winged figure with goat horns and a lit torch. Two humans are chained at the base, but the chains are loose and neither of them has their hands bound. The inverted pentagram above the figure's head points to a life energy turned downward.
