The cards · VIII · Major arcana
Justice
balance · truth · consequence · clarity · responsibility
Justice is about seeing facts as they are and accepting what follows from them. It is the willingness to weigh reasons, name responsibilities and adjust what is uneven, even when the adjustment displeases you. It appears when a decision needs to be made by criterion, not by affinity.
Draw the cards Bring your question, draw the cards and see what they show.
Reversed
When balance is lost, it points to hasty judgment, double standards, or the flight from one's own responsibility disguised as argument. It can also be the other extreme, the relentless self-demand that treats every slip as proof of a character flaw. Worth noticing where you apply different criteria to yourself and to others.
Light
- A criterion that does not bend to convenience
- Responsibility taken on without excuses
- Correcting what was uneven
- Clarity between facts and versions
Shadow
- Judgement without listening
- Measuring others by one rule and yourself by another
- Self-demand that does not forgive
- Using the argument to escape responsibility
Questions to notice
- Where do you demand of yourself a standard you do not demand of others?
- Which fact have you been avoiding facing directly?
- What follows from your choice, whether you like it or not?
What the card shows
Psychological aspects
The ability to distinguish fact from interpretation and to hold a judgement without confusing yourself with it. Linked to the function of evaluating, correcting and integrating what was denied. In excess, a permanent inner tribunal; in its absence, convenient blindness.
Emotional aspects
It often brings relief at naming what was confused and discomfort at no longer being able to pretend you did not know. It stirs guilt, resentment and the difference between remorse and punishment.
Behavioural aspects
Checks, compares, negotiates, records, owns up to what they did. May turn conversation into judgement, or postpone the fair decision for fear of other people's reaction.
In daily life
Relationships
A moment of settling accounts, of renegotiating what is uneven and of telling the truth without detours. It asks for symmetry: it is not about winning the argument, but about leaving the relationship honest.
Work
Contracts, evaluations, deadlines, limits of responsibility, decisions that need a public criterion. It speaks of someone who defends their position based on facts and of the risk of setting yourself up as judge of other people's work.
Personal life
The relationship with yourself: what you owe to yourself and what you still pay for old choices. It invites you to correct course without turning the correction into punishment.
The image
Between two columns sits a crowned figure, a raised sword in the right hand and scales in the left. The gaze is frontal and direct. The sword often indicates the decision that cuts through doubt, and the scales, the measure that has to be redone for each case.
